Feeding entails the process of eating or drinking, which involves preparing food and liquids for intake (chewing, sucking, swallowing). Swallowing entails transporting the food/liquid to the stomach. Feeding disorders can include impaired oral motor skills and/or oral sensory function. Some of the following behaviors may be observed during mealtime: refusing age-appropriate foods or liquids, restricted variety or quantity of foods and liquids, disruptive behavior, inadequate self-feeding skills, inability to use utensils, and/or insufficient growth. The SLP will gather information from parents/caregivers based on the family's cultural background, dietary preferences, dietary aversions, medical history, developmental history, and concerns. We encourage families to bring preferred and non-preferred food items for the evaluation.
Feeding and swallowing treatment incorporates developmentally appropriate approaches to ensure safe and adequate nutrition and hydration. We collaborate with the family to maximize the child's fullest potential, reduce disruptive behaviors during mealtime, improve sensory motor skills, and promote confidence during meal time.
